Banks

 

There are seven prominent banks in the UK including HSBC, Barclays, Royal Bank of Scotland, Lloyds, HBOS, Standard Chartered as well as Co-Operative Bank. HSBC is by far the biggest bank in terms of assets. In total market value HSBC has a net work of over £109 Billion pounds whilst the next closest bank The Royal Bank of Scotland has just over £29 Billion pounds.

The Bank of Scotland has headquarters in Edinburgh Scotland and has a deep rooted history that dates back all the way into the 17th Century. It was also in the year 2001 that the Bank of Scotland merged with Halifax bank to become HBOS, but the Bank of Scotland still does business under this name.

Barclays is the other prominent UK bank that is a major bank in Europe that is considered to be the 25th largest company worldwide as stated by Forbes Magazine. The headquarters for this bank is located in the beautiful city of London at Lombard Street. Barclays also has a deep rooted history like its counterpart The Bank of Scotland. It’s history dates back to 1690 when James Barclay who was the son in law of one of the owners. Barclays was also responsible for producing the first ever credit card in the UK as well as the first ATM cash machine in 1965 and 1966 respectively.

Also Barclays created the first debit card in 1985 which was widely known as connect.
